Woman Arrested Twice in 3 Days at Walmart

Police said the woman shoplifted from Walmart, and when she was apprehended two days later for entering the store again she kicked a police officer.

A Forest Park woman was arrested twice in three days after returning to Walmart just a couple of days after being charged for retail theft there.  Champagne J. Williams, 20, of Forest Park, was charged with retail theft May 9 after police were called to Walmart, 1300 Des Plaines Ave. Store security said Williams took two bags and put other items from the store in them. Police said they caught her running through the nearby Portillo's parking lot. She was charged and given a July 2 court date.  Williams was told not to return to Walmart, but on May 11, she was seen entering Walmart and putting clothing and shoes in a bag from a Walmart display. She again fled but was tracked down in an alley north of Roosevelt Road.  She resisted arrest and…

Pizza Parlor to Open on Madison Street

Riverside business owner moves pizza parlor to Forest Park for the space, foot traffic.

A pizzeria with a "'60s/'70s" theme is slated to open next month at 7510 Madison St. in Forest Park, Triblocal reported Tuesday. Restaurant owner Valerie Presto, who is moving her business from Riverside to Forest Park, told Triblocal the menu will feature handmade pizzas with fresh toppings. The 1,500-square-foot eatery will seat up to 25 people and keep its focus on carryout and delivery service, Forest Park village records show. Presto closed Prestello's in Riverside last month to make the move. She told the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark she'd have a much bigger space in Forest Park and a location with "so much more" foot traffic. Memorial Day Celebrations Planned in Oak Park, River Forest

Memorial Day celebrations in the area include a commemoration ceremony in Scoville Park and a parade in River Forest with free hot dogs at the end.

It's time to kick off summer again with a Memorial Day barbeque, maybe a little picnic and a special tribute to the men and women who serve and have served our country. Here is what's going on this Memorial Day weekend in the area: The Memorial Day commemoration ceremony at 9 a.m., Mon., May 27 in Oak Park will feature remarks from public officials and area veterans, music, a rifle salute from the Oak Park honor guard, and special tributes to fallen soldiers and River Forest diplomat Anne Smedinghoff, who was one of five Americans killed last month in Afghanistan. The ceremony will take place at the Peace Triumphant monument in Scoville Park, near Lake Street and Oak Park Avenue. The event also will tie into the 150th anniversary …

Memorial Day Weekend Traffic in Real Time

From Memorial Day parades to holiday fender benders, this live map shows delays and diversions on area roads right now.

If you're on a mobile device, click here to view the map. When you're done getting gas and packing the car, check out the live results from MapQuest above to see what's standing between you and the start of your three-day weekend. Mapquest scans for parade routes, ongoing construction, block parties and traffic jams. If your route is green, your good. If it's red, you may be headed into a line of rubbernecking fools. Good luck!

Local Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Returning veterans are now facing a new enemy at home--long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically with location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about a year and one month, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. According to the data for the Chicago VA Regional Office, 2122 W. Taylor St., 19,712 veterans were …

Where's the Cheapest Gas in Town?

You can use this gas price widget to always find the lowest price of the moment. Pro tip: Gas up early this week to save money.

Click here for a full-screen view of the gas price map. If you don't see a map of our local area, click the magnifying glass in the upper right to enter your address. Gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the past three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to…

Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try …

Frank Lloyd Wright House Walk: Long House

I took the Frank Lloyd Wright house walk in Oak Park last weekend, and we're featuring one home each day. Today, we look at the Long House by Leon Stanhope.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust's House Walk was Saturday, May 18, and this week we'll be featuring one of the homes each day. The event put the spotlight on local homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries. Of the 11 spots open for touring, I was able to make six.  Today we feature the Frank E. Long house, located at 401 N. Linden Ave. It was built in 1925 by Leon E. Stanhope. A few things to know: More from the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust: The Tudor Revival was locally popular during the 1920s, but rarely has it been executed with such panache. The Long House's dominant feature—its undulating false-thatched roof—offers a metaphorical tip of the hat to Englang's thatched cottages.  The Stanhope-…
