Smedinghoff was a U.S. foreign service officer in Kabul, Afghanistan, and she was traveling with a group of people to deliver books to a local school in the Zabul Province. She is survived by her parents, Thomas and Mary Beth Smedinghoff; one brother, Mark; two sisters, Regina and Joan; a grandmother, Dorothy; and several aunts, uncles and 22 cousins. Three grandparents, John Smedinghoff, Frank Tokarski and Bernice Tokarski, died earlier. The Village of River Forest is mourning the loss of 25-year-old Anne Smedinghoff, a U.S. diplomat who was killed during a car bombing in Afghanistan on April 6. Arrangements are still pending, but many community members have tied white ribbons around their trees and displayed American flags at their homes. "The white ribbons symbolize the peace Anne bravely and passionately worked so hard to bring to the world," village president John Rigas said in a news release. The flag at Village Hall will be flown at half-staff until Smedinghoff is laid to rest, Rigas said.
