John Malone Jr., 20, died Saturday, May 4, after a car he was in rolled over while he and four friends were driving home fro Indiana University. Friends from Deerfield, La Grange and Wilmette were also injured.
Services have been set for a River Forest college student who died in a car crash Saturday on his way home from college. John J. Malone Jr. died Saturday, May 4, 2013. He was 20. He was ejected from the back seat of a car after a tire blew out on Interstate 65 in Indiana. Malone was driving home with four friends from the University of Indiana. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S Marion St. in Oak Park. The funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at St. Giles Church, 1025 Columbian Ave. in Oak Park. River Forest resident Anne Smedinghoff, 25, died during a car bombing April 6 in Afghanistan. She was a U.S. diplomat and on her way to deliver books to children.
Dear Residents of River Forest, We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone for the heartwarming displays of affection and admiration for our dear Anne. Your support for us at this most difficult time has brought us great comfort and strength. We were deeply moved by all of the flags and white ribbons that lined every street of River Forest and parts of neighboring communities. They served as a fitting tribute to Anne's loving spirit, service to our country, and work supporting the cause of peace. During the procession following her funeral, we were moved to tears by the many residents, police, and fire personnel who stood out in the rain holding flags and signs, saluting Anne, and saying their goodbyes. Anne Smedinghoff, of River Forest, died during a car-bombing in Afghanistan on Saturday, April 6, 2013. She was 25. Smedinghoff was a U.S. foreign service officer in Kabul, Afghanistan, and she was traveling with a group of people to deliver books to a local school in the Zabul Province. She is survived by her parents, Thomas and Mary Beth Smedinghoff; one brother, Mark; two sisters, Regina and Joan; a grandmother, Dorothy; and several aunts, uncles and 22 cousins. Three grandparents, John Smedinghoff, Frank Tokarski and Bernice Tokarski, died earlier. Smedinghoff, a 25-year-old River Forest resident, was killed in a car bombing Saturday in Afghanistan. Residents are tying white ribbons around their trees and displaying American flags. Free ribbons and flags are available tonight.
The Village of River Forest is mourning the loss of 25-year-old Anne Smedinghoff, a U.S. diplomat who was killed during a car bombing in Afghanistan on April 6. Arrangements are still pending, but many community members have tied white ribbons around their trees and displayed American flags at their homes. "The white ribbons symbolize the peace Anne bravely and passionately worked so hard to bring to the world," village president John Rigas said in a news release. The flag at Village Hall will be flown at half-staff until Smedinghoff is laid to rest, Rigas said. A group from First Presbyterian Church has set up a service to pick up white ribbons and American flags for those wishing to support the Smedinghoff family. The church offered …
