Brown Cow's Trough Eating Contest a Treat for All

Give me your sticky, your full, your huddled masses yearning to un-freeze their brains. 

Welcome to America, where we have eating contests. And in Forest Park, one of the most nationally lauded ice cream parlor's Trough Eating Contest did not disappoint this week.

The Brown Cow ice cream parlor held its annual ice cream eating contest Monday. There were eight teams of three members each, and they were challenged to eat a trough of ice cream (that's 7 pounds, or 21 scoops, of a variety of the flavors Brown Cow serves) as fast as they could.

Thick and Sexy was the winning team, clocking in at 6:10. Elmwood Park residents Julian Batula, Mario Dato and Ted Majka came close to winning last year, but had unfinished ice cream melted on the table.

This year, they didn't take any chances. It's in the rules that all ice cream, even if spilled on the ground, must be consumed. So when the trough was empty, they took to the table to soak up the rest of the melted ice cream.

"We weren't going to let that happen this year," Batula said. "We just tried to scoop as much as we could."  

For winning, the three get free ice cream at The Brown Cow for a year, and also received a gift bag full of goodies from local merchants, including Schauer's Hardware, Piggyback Tavern, From Scratch Kitchen, The Junction Diner and Team Blonde. 

Thick and Sexy fell about one minute short of the all-time record, which was set by Troughic Thunder at 5:09. 

Not far behind was Trinity of Sin, at 7:54, and On Trough of the World, at 9:06. They received gift bags, and every other participant got a free T-shirt. A crowd of about 100 people came out to cheer on the participants.
